Work conditions are changing rapidly as organizations adapt to economic crises and the increasing pressures of globalization. Occupational stress results from poor work conditions and when the demands an employee faces exceed their resources and ability to respond to those demands. Nearly 1/3 of workers report feeling stressed on a regular basis. Stress can result in poor mental health, emotional strain, maladaptive behaviors, and an array of physical health conditions. These conditions can contribute to a number of expensive outcomes for organizations including poor productivity, absenteeism, presenteeism, turnover, and increasing use of healthcare. This presentation will describe the causes and consequences of stress and provide an overview of strategies employers can implement to reduce occupational stress.
