Topic: Beyond Diversity: Blurring the Lines that Divide Us

Our workforce in the United States is increasingly diverse, and yet work outcomes for minority groups fall far behind those in the majority. Only 5 Fortune 500 companies have African American CEOs. Men are 30% more likely than women to be promoted to manager. Members of the LGBT community face more negative labor outcomes than their heterosexual counterparts. Why is this the case? Whose problem is it? What can HR Professionals do about it? This talk will address why diversity can divide us, even when we are not aware of it, and what HR leaders can do to blur and even eliminate those lines of division, including how to recognize and minimize cognitive biases and attend to and repair structural biases.

Presentation Learning Objectives:

  • How both cognitive and structural biases explain different outcomes for underrepresented groups
  • To recognize pernicious unconscious processes like implicit bias and stereotype threat and their implications
  • Steps HR leaders can take, personally and within their organizations, to minimize bias in employee recruiting, hiring, promotion, and retention
